Instructions

  1. Open the large .jpg image provided for the Tutorial or a large one of your own.
  2. Click on your Selection Tool>Selection Type Rectangle; Feather 0; Antialias Unchecked; As we want a sharp edge with no blending/feathering.
  3. For the selection I have chosen to cut from the image to use for a AV.
  4. Hold cursor over image and looking at the Status Bar at bottom of your workspace - on the left side you will see a bracketed set of numbers.
  5. When the 1st bracketed numbers read (x150, y50) Left click and holding down mouse button drag down and and across to the rightside until the now visible 2nd set of braketed numbers read (426,362) then let mouse button go.
showing selection Image is 60% of actual size.

NOTE: Before you let the mouse button go you will have seen that there are 4 sets of bracketed numbers - Lets expain what these are

    (150,50) -> (424,362) = (274 x 312) [0.878]
    1. (150,50) is the starting point ie: the 150th pixel across from the left side and 50th pixel down from the top.
    2. (424,362) is our finishing point ie: the 426th pixel across from the left side and the 312th pixel down from the top.
    3. (274 x 312) is the finished selection size ie: 276pixels wide x 312pixels high {or the finshing pont bracket values minus the the starting point bracket values}.
    4. [0.878] is the ratio of the width of the selection to the height of the selection - {A Mega AV size is 102pixels wide x 116pixels high ie: Ratio[0.879] which is why I made my selection choice as close to the ratio shape as I could so that when we resize it the distortion will not be noticable.
  6. Image>Crop to Selection. ( Shift + R )
    showing new image from selection
  7. You can now close the original image as we have finished with it.
  8. Image>Resize> ( Shift + S ) >Resize all layers Checked; Lock Aspect Ratio Unchecked; Resize type Smart Size (select from drop down menu); Print Size Unchecked (as they just tell you what size the image will be if you print it out and they are not relevant for this lesson); Pixel Dimensions - Width 102; height 116; Pixels>OK.
image resized to use as a mega

You will notice that the images facial features now appear slightly blurred.
  9. Let's Sharpen our new Mega AV - This can be done in 2 ways in PSP7 and is personal choice -
    1. Adjust>Sharpeness>Sharpen
      original       adjust type a
    2. Adjust>Sharpeness>Unsharpen Mask>Radius 2.00; Strength 35; Clipping 5>OK.
      original       adjust type c
  10. Your New Mega Size Image is ready for you to personalize into a AV.
  11. Layers>Merge>Merge All (Flatten)
  12. Time to go play and experiment with the things you have learned today .... Remember that the suggested settings are just that - suggested - as a starting point - All images you do will differ slightly.

    Have fun .... woven
