Warped Strip Stationery Style Tutorial

The tutorial was written for PSPX2 - but can be done using any of the versions of PSP

Requirements for this tutorial

Select an Image that is almost square just slightly wider than it is high
The image I used came to me in a email - If I knew the Artist's name I would credit him or her here

For Fonts go to the Fonts Menu Font are sorted alphabetically

Instructions

  1. Open your Image in PSP
  2. Image>Resize ( Shift + S )> Lock Aspect Ratio Unchecked; Resample using Checked; Select Smart Size from dropdown menu; Width 310px; height 250px>OK.
  3. Duplicate Image ( Shift + D ) - Do this 2 times and put one of these aside as we will need it again later - and close the original image to keep it in its original state.
  4. Image>Add Borders>Symmetric Checked; Enter 5 into any of the boxes and the rest will self adjust; Right click on the wee colour swatch and select White>OK.
  5. Select you Magic Wand Tool>Mode Replace; Match Mode RGB Value; Tolerance 0; Use all layers Checked or Unchecked (there is only one layer); Feather 0; Contiguous Checked; Anti-alias Unchecked;
    1. Left click inside the new white border you created to select it.
    2. Edit> Copy ( Ctrl + C ).
    3. Selections>Select None ( Ctrl + D ).
    4. Edit>Paste>Paste as New Layer ( Ctrl + L ).
    5. Layers>Duplicate Layer.
  6. Effects>Distortion Effects>Warp>Horizontal % -76 (minus); Vertical % -51; Size +86; Strength -28>OK.
  7. Layers>Merge>Merge Down.

  8. With the Magic Wand still the active Tool>Change Mode to Add(shift); leave rest settings as before.
    1. Left click into each of the small areas created by the white borders to the top left and below the main part of the image to select them all
    2. Selections>Modify>Expand> Enter 2 into the box>OK.
    3. On Layers palette> click on the bottom Background layer to make it the active layer now.
    4. Effects>Art Media Effects>Coloured Pencil>Detail 36; Opacity 52>OK.
    5. Selections>Float.
    6. Effects>3dEffects>Cutout> Vertical and Horizontal both 0; Opacity 100; Blur 27; Fill interier with colour Unchecked; Right click on wee shadow colour swatch and select Black>OK.
    7. Selections>Invert ( Ctrl+ Shift + I ).
    8. Selections>Float.
    9. Effects>3dEffects>Cutout> Change Blur to 30; leave other settings as before>OK.
    10. Selections>Select None ( Ctrl + D ).
    11. Layers>Merge>Merge Visible.

  9. Image>Canvas Size>Lock Aspect ratio Unchecked; make Width 900 pixels; hieght same as original 260; Placement - click on the left pointing arrow This will place your image on the left side of your new wide canvas
    1. Image>Duplicate.
    2. Image>Mirror ( Ctrl + M ).
    3. Layers>Merge>Merge Visible.

  10. With you magic wand still the active tool>Leave settings as before.
    1. Left click inside the transparent area between the images to select it.
  11. Select your Floodfill Tool ( F )>Match Mode RGB Value or None; Tolerance 0; Use all layers Checked or Unchecked (Only one layer at present); Blend Mode Normal; Opacity 100.
  12. Click on your Dropper Tool ( E )>Sample size 1 Pixel.
    1. Hold your cursor over a lightish colour in your image and Right click to set this colour in the Background/Fill of your Material palette.
    2. On your Material Palette -
      • Left click on the wee buttons underneath both your foreground and background colour swatches and select solid colour on both
      • Then Right click on the Foreground colour swatch and select White.
      • Next click on the wee button underneath your Foreground colour swatch again and select Gradient.
      • Left click on the Foreground gradient colour swatch To open the Materials porperties dialogue box> Texture and Invert both Unchecked; Style Sunburst; Repeats 0; Link center and focal points Checked; Horizontal and Vertical both 50>OK.
    3. Left click inside the selected area to Floodfill it with your sunburst gradient.
  13. Click on the image we put aside at the start to make it the active image now.
    1. Click on your Selection Tool ( S )> Selection Type Circle; Mode Replace; Feather 40; Anti-alias checked
    2. Hold you cursor over the image in the middle of an area you would like to select I chose the spot midway between my pup and kitty heads Then left click and holding mouse button down drag out a short distance I went as far a the kittys ear and then let mouse button go
      NOTE:: The marquee will spring out 40 pixels around the area you selected - this is the amount of the feather we set before.
      Right click if not happy with the finished seelction to remove it and then repeat again until you are happy with the area selected.
    3. Edit>Copy ( Ctrl + C ).
  14. Now click back on our wide image again to make it the active image again.
  15. Layers>New Raster Layer>OK.
  16. Edit>Paste>Paste into selection.
  17. On Layer Palette>Change the Opacity of the top layer that has the new selection on to 40% and the blend to Luminance.
  18. Edit>Copy - Edit>Paste>Paste as a new image ( Ctrl + V or Ctrl + Shift + V ) and put this image aside for now.
  19. Click back on the main image again
  20. Selections>Invert ( Ctrl+ Shift + I ).
  21. Effects>3dEffects>Drop Shadow> Vertical and horizontal both 0; Opacity 100; Blur 22; Shadow on new layer Unchecked; Right click on the we colour swatch and select Black>OK.
  22. Layers> New Raster Layer.
    1. Add watermark.
    2. Layers>Merge>Merge All(Flatten).
  23. Let's make a Background tile we can use with our image now

    Now click on the image we created before from the selection to make it the active image
  24. Effects>Distortion Effects>Wave> Horizontal displacement - Amplitude 21; Wavelength 83; Vertical displacement - Amplitude 18; Wavelength 2; Edge mode Transparent Checked>OK.
  25. Layers> New Raster Layer.
  26. Layers>Arrange>Send to bottom.
  27. Click on the Floodfill Tool again ( F )> Settings as before
  28. Materials palette>Left click on the Gradient foreground colour swatch and Check Invert; Leave other settings as before>OK.
  29. And Left click on your image to floodfill the bottom layer with the sunburst inverted gradient.
  30. Layers>Merge>Merge All(flatten).
  31. Effects>Image Effects>Seamess Tiling> Corner Checked; Bidirectional Checked; Vertical and Horizontal Offset both 0; Transition 100; Corner - Curved Checked>OK.
    Shows seamless tile
