provided image
Image is 50% of actual size.
This is not an image of my making, it is a cute one that has cropped up in a couple of .pps and emails shared with me over time - and if I knew the Artist's name I would give credit to them here.

Let's make a large Clean Picture Tube/.pspimage Instructions

  1. Open the provided image in PSP.
  2. Layers Palette>Promote Background Layer. Converts Background Layer into a Raster Layer so that when we remove the background areas you will end up with a transparent background and not a plain coloured one - which would defeat the purpose of what we are doing in creating a tube
  3. Click on your Selections Tool( S )>Selection Type Rectangle; Mode Replace; Feather 0; Antialias Unchecked.
    1. Make a selection around the cat leaving a small amount of background around it.
    2. Image>Crop to Selection( Shift + R ). You will now have a smaller image without all the extra background on it
      Cropped Image
  4. Select your Freehand Selection Tool Freehand Selection Tool Icon> Selection Type Point to Point;Mode Replace; Feather 0; Smoothing 0; Antialias Checked; Use All Layers Unchecked.
    1. View>Zoom +> Several times until image is 500% ( Use Scroll on Mouse ).
    2. Using scroll bars on the enlarged image poisiton the image so that the bottom lefthand corner is visible.
    3. Hold cursor over the image on the left ear an in a pixel from the edge - as in image below
Shows start position of Freestyle Selection Tool
Left Click move cursor along the ear a few pixels ti the right and left click again - repeat this motion until you reach where the ear joins the body - then move straight down to the bottom edge of the image and left click - move across into the left corner of the image and left click - move up the leftside of the image to level with or just lower than the spot on the ear where you started and left click - then move back to your start spot and Right Click to complete your 1st selection.
      Shows 1st completed selection
    4. Edit>Cut( Delete button ).
    5. Selections>Select None ( Ctrl + D ).
Shows 1st completed selection with background removed
  5. Repeat Steps 4c to 4e inclusive - making a new selection up the left side of the ear - across to the left side - down into the transparent area - across to where you started and right click to complet selection again.
Shows 2nd completed selection with background removed
  6. Scroll image up so that you can see a bit of the transparent area still at the bottom of the left side.
  7. Repeat Steps 4c to 4e inclusive and remove some background from the side of the cats face.
  8. Keep doing this intil you get around the cat - Leaving the area of the background that includes the grasshopper.

NOTE: Do only a small area at a time.
  9. Now leaving the grasshopper area for a minute - Select and cut the background from between the body of the cat and its legs.
  10. View>Zoom +> Image up to 600% and centre the grasshopper section in the window.
  11. Now very carefully select and cut areas of the background around the grasshopper and between his legs - only doing a very small section at a time.
    Shows image with background removed
  12. Save your image as a .psp image to retain its transparent background for use in future projects - OR -

Export>Picture Tube and name and save as a Picture Tube to access through your Picture Tube Tool.

NOW - Select some images of your own and make some tubes of your own choosing.

    NOTE:
By removing the background in this manner it cuts all the background image out completely giving the tube a nice clean looking finish - when you just erase the background using the erasor tool it always requires a lot of cleaning up of odd pixels that get left behind.
