Instructions

You can make, save, edit and re-use Unique Selections that you create from an Image or from a Preset Shape

For this Tutorial we will use the picture of the heart you downloaded at the start.

Let us Create and Save our Heart Selection

  1. Open the heart.gif image that you downloaded and saved.
  2. Image> Increase the color depth> RGB 8bit/channel Older versions of PSP this will be 16 million(24bit) ( Ctrl + Shift + 0 ) ie: Zero not a capital O.
  3. Click on your Freehand Selection Tool> Selection Type - Smart Edge; Mode - Replace; Feather and Smoothing both 0; Anti-alias Checked.
NOTE: For some selections you make you will be able to gove the smoothing a value, however for this tutorial we will do the smoothing as a separate action after we have made our selection.
  4. Hold your cursor anywhere around the edge of the heart and just a pixel or 2 inside the edge of the heart and left click one time - then move along a sort distance and again just inside the edge of the heart click one time again - keep doing this until you get back to the point or very close to the point that you started from - then Right click one time to complete the selection.

When you have done this you will have a selection marquee wriggling around the outside of the heart.
  5. On top toolbar go to Selections> Selections> Modify> Smooth> Smooth amount and Corner scale (pixels) both 5; Anti-alias and Preserve corners both Checked> OK.
  6. Selections> Load/Save Selections> Save selection to Disk> Enter Heart into the Dialogue box> Save.

Keep the Heart Image open as while we have it we will use it to make another selection to save

Let us Edit our Heart Selection and Save our Heart Selection

  1. Select your Paintbrush Tool ( B )> Shape Round; Size 16; Hardness 50; Step 10; Density and Thickness both 100; Rotation 0; Opacity 100; Blend Mode Normal; Wet look and continuous both Unchecked.
  2. Materials Palette> Foreground - left click on the wee button underneath the foreground colour swatch and select Solid color; then right click on the large foreground colour swatch and select Black
Note: Using Black takes away from the selection - Using white adds to it - using shades of grey can add or subtract depending on the lightness or darkness of the grey.
  3. Selections> Edit Selection The heart will change to a matt pink color
  4. Holding the cursor outside the heart on the upper left side left click and holding down the mouse button drag a jagged line across and down the heart and out the lower right side to form a broken heart. Where you have used the paintbrish you will be able to see through the matt pink selection editing area to the heart underneath
  5. Selections> Edit Selection This turns off the Editing mode and returns the marquee wriggling lines going around our now 2 selections that form each part of the broken heart.
  6. Selections> Load/Save Selections> Save selection to Disk> Enter Broken Heart into the Dialogue box> Save.

You can now close the heart image as we are finished with it
And we have created and saved 2 new selections - a full heart and a broken heart.

Next we will use our full heart to make a selection from an image to create or add to a new image

  1. Open a large image you wish to take a heart shaped selection from
  2. If necessary increase its color depth following instructions a the beginning of the Instructions for this tutorial
  3. Selections> Load/Save Selection> Load selection from disk> From dropdown menu select our full heart shaped seelction we created and saved; Replace selection Checked; Source Luminence or any non-zero value Checked; Move to Upper left and Invert selection both Unchecked> Load. The selection will naturally situate itself in the upper left corner of the image
  4. Click on your Move tool ( B ) and right click oinside the pink heart shape and holding down mouse button drag it across so that the center of the heart sits over what you want to be the center of your selection you are taking and then let mouse button goto drop it there.
    cser_selection_c.jpg
Now looking at this area on my image I would like the selection to be larger - so let's make it larger now
Note: if the area was too larger you can also make it smaller at this point too by using the contract instead of expand in the following Step.
  5. Selections> Modify> Expand> I entered 20 into the dialogue box>OK. This expands your selection shape by 20pixels all the way around it.
  6. I was not happy with the placement now so I used the move tool right clicked and dreagged to center it again to include the star and some of the tops of the right hand gumnut - then when I was happy I let the mouse button go.
  7. At this point you can Edit> Copy this selected area onto a New project you are creating.

I would love to see what you create from using your new unique selections - just click on the email link at the bottom of the page to show them to me
