Changes in PSPX2

What they are and what they do.
The lesson was written using PSP X2
by Woven
The Bold writing are the keyboard shortcuts for each action. You may or may not need to have the [ F lock ] on your keyboard activated for these to work
There are some great new features in PSPX2 and also some enhancements to features and some functions have been relocated to streamline the interface or makeway for new features

I will address these in turn as I come to each.

On the Menu links below you can jump down to any specific section on this page and at the end of each section is a return to top menu link to bring you back to these links directly without the need to scroll back up.

FILE

  1. Auto-Preserve & Re-Store Original - A fantastic new feature in PSP and a real safety net for you and your images. By enabling this feature when you save you image you are editing the original is saved in a sub-folder inside the folder that you save the editied copy in - thus preserving the original without acccidently over-writing it.
    1. To enable the Auto-Preserve function go to File>Preferences>General Program Preferences -
      • On the leftside of the Popup select Auto-Preserve.
      • Click on the Auto-Preserve Check box>OK.
    2. To create a preserved image automatically when you first save an image in the Save Popup click Yes-Do this everytime -
The original is saved into a sub-folder inside the folder you are saving your image too - the sub-folder is called Corel Auto-Preserve.
    3. When working on your edited image if you wish to go back to the start again -
keep the edited as the active image and then click on File>Restore Original and the original will appear on your workspace automatically minus all the changes you made to the edited one -
To do this in previous PSP versions I went to the History Palette and clicked on the bottom of the edits I had made and waited for ages for it to reverse all the changes and hoped that it did it all

NOTE: A great part of this feature is that you can have saved originals at various stages of creating your image so that you can edit from a given point in the process for using in another project.

  2. Save for Office - The new Save for Office function allows you to resize a photo or image and to select the appropriate file format depending on the end use.
    1. File>Office - and select the folder you wish to save the photo/image into.
    2. To select the way the photo/image is to be optimized you can choose from the following selections - the end use will dfine the amount of optimization -
      • Desktop Printing - For a high quality image, but with a smallet file size the image resolution is set at a Medium 200dpi - A great option for general page layouts of brochures, cards, newsletters etc.
      • Professional Printing - For an image of the highest possible quality using professonal printing equipment - the dpi image resolution is set at a High 300dpi.
      • Screen & Email - Gives the smallest file size which is great for sharing photos via email and gives fast easy displaying - the image resolution is set at a Low96dpi.
    3. Advanced Settings - Gives you the added option of being able to change the dimensions of your image which will also affect the file size ( the larger the image size - the larger the file size).
    4. Name your Image/Photo.
    5. Choose the file type you wish your image saved as - there are 5 choices depending again on end use.
    6. Click on Save.

NOTE: The default setting for optimization is set at Screen or email and file type PNG (Portable Network Graphics).

  3. HDR Photo Merge (High Dynamic Range Photo Merge) - This is an amazing new function for all you Photo buffs.
When photographing in a setting that has a high contrasting bright light source eg. inside a room and bright sunlight coming thru windows or outdoors and the sun or moon will be in the photo - you shoot minimum of 2 and maximum of 9 photos from the identical spot having camera on a tripod or other stable platform taking one on settings for the darker shadowed areas and one for the brighter areas of your image -
then using the HDR Photo Merge you can combine these 2 images to show a complete range of detail in the finished image - (an effect that cannot be produced by any camera either film or digital - the function is similar to the process used in a darkroom and is achieved by using a Clarify control).
    1. File>HDR Photo Merge.
    2. Loads the images to be merged (At least 2 - but you can use up to 9 in this process)
    3. When happy with the selection - Click on align images (the time this pixel alignment step takes will be dependant on the number of images being combined).
    4. In Adjustments group section - you can manually adjust brightness and overall clarity or use suggested settings - all viewed in a preview pane.
    5. You have the option also to create your finished image as a 16bit image.
image too bright    image too dark    image after HDR Merge on suggested settings only
Image too Bright      Image too dark        Image after HDR Photo Merge on suggested settings only

  4. Export> Set Wallpaper - When you have an image open in PSP eg. a photo you like or an artwork you made you can use this as a wallpaper on your dektop - By going to File>Export>Set Wallpaper (then if you look at your desktop it is now the background behind your icons).

  5. LaunchCorelMediaOne Merge - This program replaces the old Photo Album that used to come packaged with PSP or purchased as a Standalone program - from there in PSPXI it was replaced with the much improved Corel Snapfire program for fast initial editing of your photos when downloaded from your cameras.
The newest and latest version of this is now called Corel Media One with even more features packed in - and for the purchasers of a registered version of PSPX2 you can download the Corel Media One Plus with full interactivity with PSP for all that extra Effects editing - this is a standalone product available to non PSPX2 registered owners from Corel.com.

  6. Preferences>File Format Preferences - This has been made easier to use with the added enhancement of a new short special list in the Save as section that gives you your most frequently used file formats at the top of the list in a new section that is added to each time you use a different format - giving you fast easy access to the short list followed by the long full list for when you need it.

EDIT

  1. Copy Special - Allows you to copy the image you are working on to paste into as a new image for further editing or for placing into your project in another program or for sending to an outside printer or sharing via email with your friends - your copying choices are -
    • Copy Merged as normal for multi layered images.
    • Copy Professional Printing - sets a High dpi of 300.
    • Copy Desktop Printing - sets a Medium dpi of 200.
    • Copy Screen/Email - sets a Low dpi of 96.

View

  1. Express Lab - A great new function Allows you to view the photos in a single folder instread of wading thru all the photos on your system. With this rapid-edit function you can quickly complete a first cut of photos eg. cropping, straightening, removing blemishes, and fixing red-eye, also allows you to give photos a Star Rating or delete ones you don't want - then at a later date you can edit others in a more detailed way.

  2. Use Graphite Workspace Theme - The new darker grpahite coloured workspace is far better for more accurate colour adjusting on your photos/images. I also find it a lot easier on the eyes. If you prefer to use the old colour workspace from prior versions of PSP you can toggle between the new and old workspace by going to -
View>Use Graphite Workspace Theme - When checked it gives you the new darker workspace and click on it again and the old one appears.

NOTE: I strongly recommend you give this New Graphite colour background a tryout for a week and I'll bet you end up preferring it too.

  1. Image>Resize - This has been streamlined to make it less daunting to new users of PSP. They have hidden the setting that usually do not need to be changed from view - To access the Full view of all settings options - check the advanced settings box.

  2. Watermarking>Visible Watermarking - For adding a visible watermark to remind people who view or you share your photos or images with of who took or produced them.
This new feature simplifies the task of adding your name or logo and also allows you to give it an embossed professional look about it.
    1. First make your graphic you want to use and save it maybe in a sub-folder in your My Documents Folder so that it is available for you to use this new easy function - to access the Visible Watermark function -
    2. Image> Watermarking> Visible Watermarking.

KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS in PSP
